Tomi Ungerer imbued his image of the satyr enjoying a joyful, sensual and sensuous round dance with daring irony. The satyr is one of the merrymaking quartet of antiquity who, alongside Pan, Dionysus and Silenus, was fondly found decorating amphorae and frescoes. In the imaginative and encircled “fresco” painted by Tomi Ungerer, under the full moon of a late summer night the satyr plays his lusty melody in praise of voluptuousness and magnanimity of the fruit.
