Description

You know Venice’s close connection with Nittardi. In many places in Venice, a majestic lion, symbol of the Venetian Republic for 1,000 years, is enthroned in various poses carved in marble or stone. For a long time, however, a Venetian lion has also stood on Nittardi, with its eagle’s wings and a tablet under its taloned paws.

The lion, Panthera leo, symbolises light, strength, majesty, courage and wisdom.
The Venetians loved lions; it was not unusual to see them in the gardens of the patricians. In 1316, to everyone’s amazement, a lioness even gave birth to her cubs in the courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale. The French stonemasons, following Napoleon’s troops, arbitrarily destroyed more than 5,000 of Venice’s lions to break the city’s pride.
But the lion defied all odds and today you can even get your hands on an authentic Venetian lion.
